Mass Effect is the latest AAA RPG from Bioware, The maker of Knights of the Old Republic, but
this time it isn’t Star Wars.

First let’s dig into the photo realistic graphics that Bioware managed to squeeze out of the Xbox
360. Mass Effect has very detailed graphics that do add a lot when it comes to adding character
to people and creating atmosphere on different planets that you go to. It does look good, but
there is a bit of slowdown in the more intense parts of the game. Nevertheless it does create a
compelling experience.

The beast part of the game, in my opinion, is the story. The story is about you, Commander
Shepherd, and your crew. The first mission drops you off on a human colony called Eden Prime
where the archeologists uncovered a Prothean beacon, the Protheans being a race that became
extinct 50 000 years ago. Soon you figure out that the colony is being attacked by robots called
the Geth and you go off on a mission to stop them. This may be the main story but other pretty
important things happen throughout the story.

The best part about being Commander Shepherd is that you get to create him. You are given
many options like name gender facial structure, hair, class, and your background. The one that
has the most effect on the story is your background, for example if you put your background as
lone survivor people will comment on it throughout the game.

The main game play is a RPG with strong shooting element including taking cover and such, but
the shooting parts aren’t the strongest part of the game. You level up along with your squad, you
order your squad to perform different spell and can tell them what weapons to use, and you even
collect stronger weapons and armor.

The main story allows for a lot of variety. You go to different planets and get to explore uncharted
planets with your mako if you choose to. There are also an excessive amount of side quests
through out the game that are very interesting. They may require you to trick people into thinking
that you want something from them and then give it to someone else so that they can arrest him.
Another huge part of the game is the dialogue trees. In these trees there are usually neutral
mean and nice responses, even though some times it will be biased towards the idea of doing
something and force you to do it. If you act mean, you become mean. If you act nice, you become
nice. It give you a reputation and changes peoples opinion about you. This is the bulk of what
Mass Effect Is About.

Overall, Mass Effect is an RPG with a fantastic story, memorable characters and pretty good
combat.
